SBSE PhiusCon Student Scholarship

The Society of Building Science Educators (SBSE) is pleased to announce that it can provide a minimum of four scholarships to qualified students to help defray the cost of attending the 2022 PhiusCon, the largest Passive House conference in North America—to be held October 27-28, 2022 in Chicago. Each scholarship will provide $825 from SBSE to assist in meeting the costs of participating in the conference. In addition, Phius (formerly Passive House Institute US) will waive the core conference registration fee for SBSE scholarship recipients. Discounted rooms at the conference hotel, The Palmer House Hilton, will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis for scholarship recipients.

These scholarships are offered to provide support for students who are interested in high-performance passive building design. Conference participation is an excellent way to improve one’s knowledge of passive building design principles, construction techniques, and developing issues in building science. Funds will be provided to scholarship recipients at the conference; they cannot be advanced prior to participation. Funds may be used to defray any aspect of conference attendance (lodging, meals, transportation) without submission of receipts. Late applications will not be considered.

Applications for PhiusCon scholarships will be evaluated with the following criteria in mind:

  1. Applicants must be a undergraduate junior, senior, or graduate student who will be enrolled in a building design or construction related academic program at the time of the conference.
  2. The applicant makes a convincing case that they are seriously interested in high-performance buildings as embodied by passive house and will benefit from conference participation.
  3. The selection process will favor those with previous exposure to the passive house approach (as presented in response to item 2 above), seek geographic diversity among applicants, and encourage diverse representation among academic institutions—assuming other selection criteria have been successfully addressed.
  4. The selection process will favor applicants who are members of SBSE, assuming other criteria have been successfully addressed.

Those accepting an offer of a scholarship will—by the act of acceptance—commit to full conference participation (excluding workshops and tours).

Kindly note that the intent of this scholarship program is to provide support for students interested in passive building technologies who have limited institutional resources at their disposal. The program is not targeted at faculty or design professionals who are gainfully employed.
