SBSE Awards and Scholarships

To support and inspire the next generation of building science educators, SBSE is pleased to offer scholarships to students and to developing-country faculty who are interested in the teaching of building science (or a closely related academic area).

SBSE offers a range of scholarships to a variety of venues (including the annual SBSE Retreat and the PLEA conference) during each calendar year. Scholarships are listed below on this page once approved by the SBSE Board of Directors.

SBSE 2024 Student Retreat Scholarship

This $900 scholarship, funded through sales of the Sun Angle Calculator, provides support for one or more students with a keen interest in pursuing a future teaching position in environmental control systems or a closely related area of building science. The scholarships are aimed at graduate students with prior experience as a teaching assistant in an environmental control systems (building science) course.  
Deadlines: March 31, 2024; April 30, 2024; May 31, 2024; June 14, 2024. Scholarships will be reviewed and issued until funding is exhausted.

Jeffrey Cook 2024 Memorial Faculty Retreat Scholarship

In honor of the late Jeffrey Cook, this $2000 scholarship is offered to one or more faculty members from a developing country in recognition of participation at the SBSE retreat. The award will be based primarily on the benefits of the scholarship to the applicant's teaching, institution, and country. 
Deadlines: March 31, 2024; April 30, 2024; May 31, 2024; June 14, 2024. Scholarships will be reviewed and issued until funding is exhausted.

SBSE Solar Decathlon Faculty Fellowship

SBSE will award two faculty fellowships to attend the 2024 Solar Decathlon Competition weekend in Golden, Colorado.

Jeffrey Cook Student Travel Scholarship to PLEA 2024 

In honor of the late Jeffrey Cook, SBSE awards scholarships to support students presenting papers at the PLEA Conference. Funding for this opportunity has been generously provided by the Jeffrey Cook Charitable Trust. It is the intention to award these scholarships to applicants from across the globe. All paper submissions to PLEA are automatically considered for this scholarship.
Scholarship recipients will be notified in March, 2024.

SBSE PhiusCon Scholarships

SBSE will award student scholarships for students to attend the 2024 PhiusCon conference.

SBSE ASES Solar Scholarships

These scholarships—up to three at $750 each, funded by a gracious donation from John Reynolds—are intended to provide support for students participating at the ASES Solar conferences in a significant role either by presenting a project or a poster.
