SBSE Awards and Scholarships

To support and inspire the next generation of building science educators, SBSE is pleased to offer scholarships to students and to developing-country faculty who are interested in the teaching of building science (or a closely related academic area).

SBSE offers a range of scholarships to a variety of venues (including the annual SBSE Retreat and the PLEA conference) during each calendar year. Scholarships are listed below on this page once approved by the SBSE Board of Directors.

SBSE Open Scholarship for Students (Fall 2019)

The Society of Building Science Educators is pleased to announce that it can provide one scholarship to a qualified student to help defray the cost of attending any building science-related conference held between May 2019 and December 2020. The scholarship will provide $700 from SBSE to assist in meeting the costs of participating in the conference.

Jeffrey Cook Student Travel Scholarship to PLEA

In honor of the late Jeffrey Cook, SBSE awards travel scholarships to support students presenting papers at PLEA Conferences. Funding for this opportunity has been generously provided by the Jeffrey Cook Charitable Trust. It is the intention to award these scholarships to applicants from across the globe.

Jeffrey Cook 2019 Memorial Faculty Retreat Scholarship

In honor of the late Jeffrey Cook, this scholarship is offered to a faculty member from a developing country to help defray the costs of attending the SBSE retreat. The award will be based primarily on the benefits of the scholarship to the applicant's teaching, institution, and country.

SBSE 2019 Student Retreat Scholarships

These scholarships—up to six at $750 each, funded through sales of the Sun Angle Calculator—are intended to provide support for students with a keen interest in pursuing a future teaching position in environmental control systems or a closely related area of building science. The scholarships are aimed at graduate students with prior experience as a teaching assistant in an environmental control systems (building science) course.

These scholarships—up to three at $750 each, funded by a gracious donation from John Reynolds—are intended to provide support for students participating at the ASES Solar conferences in a significant role either by presenting a project or a poster.

The Society of Building Science Educators will provide up to five scholarships of $500 each for early-career faculty to attend the 2019 Reynolds Symposium in Portland, Oregon.
