Building Science Education for the 90s
GZB at Pack Forest
BACKGROUND
This July will mark the 4th SBSE summer retreat. These meetings have served to provide a forum for the discussion of teaching methods and corresponding individual research interests. The 1986-1987 retreats were supported by U.S. D.O.E. The 1989 retreat is funded by the SBSE treasury in an effort to support a more broadly focused retreat. Food and lodging for the retreat, and transportation between the retreat site and the University of Washington, are covered by SBSE. Your transportation between
Seattle and home can be arranged by ACSA, if you are attending the ACSA Summer Energy Institute. Retreat activities of the past several years have been stimulating and rewarding. The previous discussion sessions have offered opportunities to renew friendships and make new acquaintances. The unique setting offers a chance to reflect on our roles as teachers.
THEME
This year we will reflect on the past and future of SBSE, and define our goals and agenda for the coming years. Questions we will examine include: Who are the members of SBSE, and what are their needs? What services does SBSE currently provide, both within and outside the academic building science community? How can we expand or increase the effectiveness of those services? What is needed to improve the accessibility and use of SBSE's Curriculum Materials and Slide Collection? How can we encourage greater member participation? What are potential sources of money to help SBSE develop our resources?
PROGRAM
The retreat will use several methods to address these questions, including individual and group presentations, small group discussions, and sufficient free time for roaming
the hills and streams, establishing personal and professional bonds, and informal brainstorming. Several past Chairs of SBSE will give presentations discussing their
expectations and experiences with the organization. Retreat participants will also have an opportunity to give introductions of themselves and their visions of SBSE. As in previous meetings, much of the productive work will take place in small focus groups on particular. topics important to the future of SBSE. All members of the meeting will then gather to hear presentations of the focus groups, and to produce a clear agenda of specific activities for SBSE in the 1990s.
