Slate of SBSE Candidates for Office 2025-2027
President-Elect
Clarke Snell
I am a licensed architect and Associate Professor of Building Technologies at New York Institute of Technology. I have been involved in high performance, low-tech design/build for the past 25 years, starting in construction, then becoming an architect, and for the past 12 years in the trenches as a professor, both of engineering and architecture. Through that progression, I have done quite a bit of design/build research with hygroscopic low-carbon building assemblies ranging from site-made (various concoctions of earth, straw, wood) to industrial waste-stream (hempcrete, geopolymer cement concrete). My current focus in academia is bringing building performance simulation into the baseline skillset for young designers. My spiel: if we do not design form and performance together, our buildings will continue to be carbon hogs. I joined the SBSE Board four years ago, serving two terms as Secretary. We are at a moment of considerable flux in academia at the same time that young architects and engineers have some heavy lifting to do in terms of climate change. I feel the SBSE has an important role to play and am excited to be involved. To my mind, my experience in industry, academia, and on the board, situates me to be an effective President-elect.
Treasurer
David Fannon
I first encountered SBSE as a graduate student when our professors advised us all to subscribe to the mailing list; and I lurked for a long while enjoying the knowledge and conversations. I joined in 2013 when I began my first academic appointment at Northeastern University in Boston. I’ve been teaching and researching the science and design of buildings there ever since, with lots of help from this community. I was particularly fortunate to attend and present at SBSE retreats in 2017 at Silver Falls, 2021 in Detroit, and 2024 at Biosphere II.
I am grateful for the collective wisdom, generosity of experience, and cheerful fellowship of this group, and have been glad to do my part to sustain it. I served on the education committee from 2020-2023, and I was honored to be elected treasurer starting in January 2024. In the two years I’ve worked with the board manage our financial resources, collecting dues and disbursing funds for retreats, events, and scholarships, while ensuring compliance with our bylaws and external regulations. As the world and our organization evolve, I remain committed to stewarding our present resources and helping develop future financial structures and resources to support our future goals. I look forward to the opportunity to work with the board and membership if elected to serve another term.
Secretary
Jaime Van Mourik
I have worked in the green building industry for more than 20 years. I was introduced to SBSE during my recent tenure at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Building Technologies Office during the annual Solar Decathlon event where I had the opportunity to present on the Zero Energy Design Designation, a post-secondary curricular recognition that I created. Education has been a key activity during my career with a focus on developing and implementing learning opportunities that will drive the design, construction and operations of high performing, healthy and resilient buildings. I am passionate about creating a better world for humans through impactful and transformational actions in the built environment and believe education is the catalyst for change. I am an instructor at The Catholic University School of Architecture teaching courses that support the Master of Science in Net Zero Design and sustainability minor. I have served on many boards with the most recent one being the Virginia Tech Firm Advisory Board acting as the chair and co-chair for the past two years. I am in the process of transitioning off that board and am looking for new opportunities to continue to support educators along with improving 21st century built environment curriculum. As secretary I would serve as the communication hub keeping detailed and organized records while contributing to the growth of the organization and its resources
