In 2024, the Society of Building Science Educators will host a workshop on Friday, April 19, 2024, during the Solar Decathlon Competition Event at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado. Participants will discuss and document:
- successful teaching strategies for the Design Challenge and Build Challenge events
- maintaining faculty and student engagement
- student learning outcomes
- institutional benefits
- creating pathways and overcoming barriers to competition participation
- the relationship between the DOE's new Zero Energy Design Designation, the Solar Decathlon, and the latest NAAB accreditation requirements
Prospective participants should be (in order of preference):
- considering first-time participation as a Faculty Lead,
- currently serving as Faculty Lead to a Solar Decathlon Design Challenge or Build Challenge team for the first time, or
- planning to return as a Faculty Lead after a gap in participation.
SBSE encourages workshop applications from all eligible to serve as a Faculty Lead, including but not limited to adjunct instructors, professors of practice, career-track instructors, and tenure/tenure-track professors, as defined by the 2024 Design Challenge or Build Challenge rules documents.
SBSE will provide $1000 of travel support to two selected workshop participants. Participants must attend the workshop in-person to receive the travel support. A block of hotel rooms will be available at a negotiated rate. Participants will be responsible for making all reservations and other travel arrangements.
