Retreat 2010:
Water:
Down to Our Last Drop
The Springs
Preserve, Las Vegas, NV
Friday, May 14—Sunday, May 16
|
This
year’s theme, “Water:
Down to Our Last Drop,” focuses on the role
that water resources play in the built and natural environment and what members of SBSE,
the design community, utilities, and policy makers are doing in the classroom and the community to provide
innovative strategies to help manage our water resource
issues.
The
retreat is being held at the Springs Preserve just
outside of Las Vegas, Nevada and provides an
extraordinary backdrop to our speculations about the
role that water plays in the environment that we create
for ourselves. The
Springs provides us with a diverse ecology to study and
architecture that has been properly balanced to its
desert setting. The
site, the original setting for the springs and meadow
which gave the city its name, and the facilities,
including the LEED Platinum certified Desert Learning
Center, will inspire our discussions.

This
year the retreat has been organized to provide a combination
of formal and informal presentations of information and time for private
and small group speculation and contemplation. Each day is split into morning sessions devoted to your
proposals and afternoon sessions devoted to hiking the Springs
grounds, visiting the facilities, and getting together for
guest speakers, workshops, and roundtables. Lunch will be served at the Springs on
Saturday and Sunday and dinner at the Sahara on Friday through
Sunday. Optional
tours have been arranged, including a trip to Hoover Dam and
Lake Mead, just 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas.
Here
are the themes for this year’s retreat:

In
the long standing tradition of SBSE, we hope that everyone
will leave the retreat with new ideas and teaching resources to
address the important issue of designing with our water
resources in mind!
The
Retreat has been organized so that it directly follows
LightFair International, May 12-14 in Las Vegas, and precedes
the ASES Solar Conference, May 18-22 in Phoenix.
