WHAT TO BRING!

Program Coordinators:
Walter Grondzik gzik@polaris.net and Bruce Haglund bhaglund@uidaho.edu

Teaching Omiyage, an SBSE retreat tradition. Please bring a teaching or research “take-away” for each participant (52 participants, bring a few extras). Past favors have included a portable sundial from Cris Benton, daylighting slides from Barbara Erwine, Energy Scheming baseball caps from G. Z. Brown's ESBL, Wiley books, Ecotone books, digital images from Sun, Wind & Light, poems, handouts, bibliographies, etc. Bring cool stuff to share!  We will do self-introductions with these items.

Appropriate clothing (IslandWood is not a National Forest, but it is woodsy): bug repellent, flashlight, hiking boots. Seattle summer weather—hot and sunny to cool and damp, so bring clothes for comfort in a range of (micro)climates and wear layers.

Program presentation: digital projectors and flip charts will be available. Presenters must bring their own computer and supply other materials as needed.

Rules, Regulations, Conveniences, and Inconveniences:

  • Registration/Arrival: IslandWood will provide retreat check-in services and keys. Any lost or unreturned set of keys will cost the participant $25.

  • Lodges: each lodge has a large sitting area with a fireplace and 12 rooms (6 downstairs and 6 upstairs). Each room has its own bathroom and changing area. The shared rooms have 2 bunk beds and a double bed. Participants are to use the lower bunk beds only!

  • Internet: The lodges have wi-fi Internet access.

  • Coffee: there will be coffee/tea served a half hour prior to breakfast. If you would like coffee/tea throughout the day, please "fill up" at breakfast.

  • Mobile phones: all retreat sessions will be telephone-free (i.e., like the days before we had phones). Please leave phones in the lodges.

  • Alcohol: Wine and beer will be available through a cash bar service for an hour prior to dinner. Washington State law requires that trained IslandWood staff serve all wine and beer in designated buildings. Removing alcohol from a designated building is prohibited by law. No alcohol may be brought onto the site. Please respect our host’s policies on this issue.

  • Smoking: IslandWood is a non-smoking environment. Smoking is only permitted in designated areas of the parking lot. Any guest who smokes on site will incur a $250 penalty.

  • The environment: IslandWood protects its ecosystem through careful maintenance, recycling, and respectful nurturance. Any food or snacks that you need to bring in, should be taken out and disposed of off site. Litter should not be seen or hidden!

  • A map of IslandWood. You'll get one in your packet of materials, but here's a pdf as a preview. [IW map.pdf 264kb]
