SBSE Image Gallery
and Photo CDs
Remember the days of the SBSE
Slide Exchange Program? Remember all those lovely sessions at
conferences with ye old slide duplicator? Never again! The slide
collection has gone digital.
Selected images from the slide
collection have been transferred onto Kodak Photo CDs. Jeff Culp and Bob
Koester at Ball State University developed a system to package,
duplicate and distribute these CDs to the membership. There are 13 CDs
presently available. They may be purchased individually or in multiples.
Most of the CDs contain approximately 100 images, each image in multiple
resolutions (up to 3072 x 2048). The CDs are organized around slide sets
with some CDs containing multiple sets. In addition, each CD includes
any image annotations provided by the author at the time of submission.
The CDs are available now
for $12 (U.S.) each (which includes shipping). Any funds raised are to
be dedicated solely to covering production costs and sustaining and
adding to the collection. Complete information on each CD (including
sample images), including ordering information is available at
http://www.bsu.edu/sbse.

Advance Praise for the SBSE
Image Archive
(Spring 2001 SBSE Newsletter):
We had the privilege to preview
one of the thirteen new SBSE Image Archive CDs and a draft of the
associated website. The gorgeous CD007 is impressive with the stick-on
CD label and the image in the jewel case using Robert Marcial's
beautiful time-lapse photo. The CD's images are in Kodak's PhotoCD image
format (.pcd) which can be opened using many commonly available image
manipulation, word processing, and publishing software packages.
However, we found that PhotoShop 4.0 won't open the pcd format images
without a filter (enabled during PS4 installation) or a Kodak plug-in
(free from their website). The contents and their usability are even
more spectacular than the packaging! The CD contains not only the 100
images, but a read.me file with general instructions and a .pdf file
with an index of the CD's contents in word and image as well as notes
from the photo authors. This table of contents made it really easy to
select specific images from the CD and to understand their significance.
The website offers several different, easy ways to preview the contents
of the CDs, which may be ordered individually, so that the buyer can be
fully informed before purchasing. Moreover, SBSE will soon be
coordinating the contribution of more images to expand the scope of the
offerings. Everyone should feel honored to have their photography
included in this fine collection! A new digital age of image-sharing is
upon us...stay tuned!
