Description
Thanks to several generous
donors, SBSE will offer up to seven $600 scholarships to support
student travel to Solar 2012 (the World Renewable Energy Forum), The
objective of these scholarships is to provide assistance to students
who are presenting papers at (or otherwise actively participating in)
Solar 2012 the annual conference of the American Solar Energy Society
(ASES), this coming May in Denver, CO.
While
it is unlikely that $600 will fully support attendance at this
conference, experience shows that these scholarships can make a
substantial difference for many participants. Applicants are
encouraged to seek additional travel and per diem support from their
home institutions (department, college, and/or university).
To
be eligible for an SBSE-ASES travel scholarship, an applicant must be
able to claim an active role in the conference (see criteria below)
and
be enrolled as a student
at the time application is made. Faculty or practicing
professionals are not eligible.
SBSE gratefully
acknowledges targeted donations from John Reynolds and Fuller and Jane
Moore that have consistently supported these scholarships. Funding
derived from sales of the Sun Angle Calculator (implemented by Alison
Kwok) also supports these scholarships.
The
following criteria will guide the selection process:
Authors: The selection
process will favor presenting authors. Applicants presenting
peer-reviewed papers will be given preference over those giving
abstract-reviewed papers. Primary authors will be given preference
over contributing authors. Applicants presenting papers will be given
preference over conference participants not presenting papers.
Conference Participants:
Applicants with conference roles other than paper presentations are
not precluded by the above criteria. Such roles might include a poster
presentation, participation in a forum (as panelist or presenter),
and/or assistance with a conference workshop. Paper presenters,
however, will receive preference.
Multiple Roles:
Applicants with multiple conference roles (as described in the
application narrative) will be given preference over single-role
participants.
Selection
of scholarship recipients will be based upon a holistic evaluation of
the applications received, with due consideration of the criteria
noted above.

How to Apply
There
is no application template for this scholarship. Applications will
consist of an electronically submitted 1
page (maximum) Word or
pdf document that clearly addresses the information described below.
Items 4 and 5 are critical to the selection committee.
1.
Applicant contact information: name of the applicant,
home mailing address, home phone, cell phone (if applicable), e-mail
address (e-mail will be the principal means of communication).
2.
Application status:
indicate whether the application is for an individual or a team; if
for a team, provide the names of all team members. If a scholarship is
awarded to a team, it is the responsibility of the principal applicant
to equitably distribute funds received to other members of the team.
SBSE will provide a single check to the principal applicant (as
defined in Item 1).
3.
Educational status:
current and prior educational institutions and degrees for applicant(s);
current student status (as of date of application); expected date of
graduation.
4.
Role at Solar 2012:
provide unambiguous information regarding your anticipated
participation at the conference. In particular, identify the specific
session(s) at Solar 2012 where you will be presenting or actively
participating and the title of your presentation(s) and/or nature of
your participation. If you are presenting a paper, provide a
description of your role in paper development and presentation (for
example, 60% co-author and sole presenter). Help the selection
committee by providing a very clear description of your conference
role(s).
5.
Impact statement:
A personal statement that explains what you expect to gain from
conference participation and the potential impact of SBSE support on
your conference experience.
6. Paper: If you are
presenting a paper, submit a pdf copy of the paper with your
application.
See
critical dates and deadlines above. Late
applications will not be considered.
Recipients
of travel scholarships are expected to attend the SBSE Annual Meeting
(held during the solar conference) to receive their scholarship checks
and recognition. See the final conference schedule (www.ases.org) for
