In honor of the late Jeffrey Cook, up to two $1,000 travel scholarships will be awarded to support students presenting papers at the 2011 PLEA Conference in Louvain, Belgium. Funding for this opportunity has been provided by the Jeffrey Cook Charitable Trust. The scholarship application / evaluation process is conducted by SBSE.
Eligible applicants must be a student at the time of original paper submission to the PLEA conference, must have a paper accepted for publication, and must present the paper at the PLEA conference. Because active conference participation is a condition of the scholarship, monies will not be available prior to the conference.
Evaluation of applications will consider the information presented in an application letter (described below); this information represents the scholarship selection criteria. Applicants are not required to be SBSE members, but membership may be considered during the selection process. This is not a need-based scholarship, but need may also be considered during the selection process.
An applicant for this scholarship will submit a two-page (maximum) letter that, in sequence, provides:
a.
applicant's name and full contact information (e-mail, phone, permanent mailing address);
b.
name of applicant's current educational institution and degree program, with an unambiguous statement of current status (full-time undergraduate, part-time graduate, ABD, etc.) within said program;
c.
names of any previous educational institutions and degrees;
| d. |

| g. |
a description of the rationale for applying for this scholarship; |
h.
a notation regarding SBSE membership status (member since ____ / nonmember)
Attach to the application (these are mandatory):
1) a copy of the paper acceptance letter from PLEA
2) a copy of the initial completed paper that was submitted to PLEA
The above materials should be submitted electronically, as one pdf file (rather than multiple files); Word is acceptable if a pdf file cannot be generated. Please compress the file size if larger than 5mb.
At the request of the Jeffrey Cook Charitable Trust, the scholarship recipient must (reasonably soon after the retreat) submit a modest note to the Trust that explains his / her future professional plans and what the scholarship meant to them.
Questions may be addressed to the chair of the SBSE Scholarships and Awards Committee, Walter Grondzik. Applications, however, are to be submitted as noted at the top of the page.
