SBSE Awards and Scholarships

To support and inspire the next generation of building science educators, SBSE offers scholarships and awards to students interested in teaching building science or a closely related area.  Below is a list of scholarships and awards we will be offering this academic year.  Opportunities will be announced on a rolling basis and each will have specific application requirements and deadlines. Please check this page regularly for updates and details. Application availability and deadlines will also be announced via the SBSE listserve.

- SBSE Student Retreat Scholarships
These scholarships are intended to provide support for students with a keen interest in pursuing a future teaching position in environmental control systems or a closely related area of building science. The scholarships are aimed at graduate students with prior experience as a teaching assistant in an environmental control systems (building science) course.
- SBSE Student Travel Scholarships to ASES
These scholarships are intended to provide travel support for students who will actively participate in the American Solar Energy Society (ASES) conference. Successful applicants will demonstrate a contribution to the conference.  These awards are substantially supported through targeted donations from Jane and Fuller Moore and John Reynolds.
- Jeffrey Cook Memorial Scholarship
In honor of the late Jeffrey Cook, this scholarship is offered to a faculty member from a developing country to defray the costs of attending the SBSE retreat. The award will be based primarily on the benefits of the scholarship to the applicant's teaching, institution, and country.
- Jeffrey Cook Student Travel Award to PLEA
In honor of the late Jeffrey Cook, travel support may be awarded to one or more students attending the 2011 PLEA conference. Successful applicants will have a paper accepted for publication and present the work at the conference.
The deadline for this year's award has passed.
- ASES Student Best Paper/Presentation Awards
SBSE intends to recognize exemplary student papers presented at the ASES annual solar conference. Recipients receive notoriety, cash, and a book.
-

SBSE Malcolm Wells Memorial Design Award
In honor of the late Malcolm Wells, this award recognizes student design projects which display clear evidence of a concern for "gentle architecture", for meaningful linkages with the earth, and/or for physical expressions of Wells’ incontestable value scale.
